Math Playground
Mathplayground.com
An American site, providing opportunities to practise number skills and interactive ways of teaching / learning new concepts. Suitable for ages 6 - 14 years.
What is the site about?
Its contains 5 main sections
- Computation Practice: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions and percentages.
- Math Manipulatives: online tools for working with fractions, drawing pie charts and investigating perimeter and area of shapes.
- Math Worksheets: design and print worksheets for specific problem types and levels, or choose from a range of existing worksheets.
- Programming: Turtle graphics
- Collaborative Maths project: where students can upload/access short videos explaining an area of maths.
- Smaller sections concentrate on maths games, word problems and logic puzzles.
Why was it chosen as site of the week?
It was chosen because:
- It contains hundreds of different maths activities, ranging from fully-interactive lessons to printable worksheets.
- It will allow students to practise their number skills in engaging, interactive ways. Some of the activities are presented as games.
- The Thinking Blocks section is an excellent way of introducing algebraic reasoning to primary students. It allows students to visualize maths problems by creating block models. They are then guided through solving the problem.
How can it be used as an educational resource?
It is suitable for individual use by students in a computer room setting, or for whole class teaching using a data projector and/or an interactive whiteboard. The Math Manipulatives section is ideally suited for using with a data projector in a whole class teaching scenario. One idea is to display the Fraction Bars manipulative. Set the bars up to show a unit on the top row, followed by 2 halves, 4 quarters and 8 eighths. This can then be used as a stimulus for new teaching, or as a revision aid. For revision, the class can be asked a variety of questions appropriate to their level - ranging from 'how many halves make up a unit,' to 'write down the maths sentence that shows half of a quarter is an eighth.'
Senior primary classes will enjoy playing Math Millionaire either individually or as a class using a data projector, with students competing to see who gets the highest score.
Younger classes could try Balloon Invaders, Addition and subtraction.
Curricular Mapping: Primary: Mathematics - Relevant to Number, Algebra, Shape and Space, Measures and Data strands.
Second Level: Junior Certificate: Mathematics: Useful for parts of Algebra, Statistics, Geometry and Funtions & Graphs sections of the syllabus.
